This year 2011 - 2012 we are aiming to raise £55,000 through the Annual Fund.
We hope that many people connected with the school will wish to join together in helping sustain and extend the excellence of education at Emanuel.
The links between Emanuel and alumni are organised by the Development Office. Please contact Sarah Fisher, Director of Development for more information on srf@emanuel.org.uk
The 200 - 20 ClubEarlier this year we launched a campaign to attract 200 people to each set up a standing order which, even at a modest £20 per month, will mean that the school benefits (with Gift Aid) by £300 per annum, this adds up to a generous gift! We are well on the way to achieving our aims with so many generous supporters however we still need your help. Please complete the below form and help Emanuel sustain and extend the excellence of education |
Projects for the Annual Fund 2010 - 2011
We have a number of major projects identified by the Headmaster, Director of Finance and Administration and the Development Director as our main centre pieces of fundraising this year which are listed below. Additionally the committee is asked for small sums throughout the year to enhance particular projects which if funds are available we are able to support
Developing a partnership with an Indian School as part of our community service commitment
Sankarnagar is not a place for tourists. A large village in Tamil Nadu it does, however, boast an extraordinary school: The Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal Golden Jubilee Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Led by Mrs Usha Raman, its even more extraordinary headmistress and founder, there are some 1,000 pupils aged four to eighteen and represents the only route out of poverty for many of its pupils. It includes a boarding house for trainee Hindu monks and a boarding house for Tsunami orphans. Fees are currently £144 per year (including books and uniforms) and in 2010 Emanuel School pupils raised the money to pay for Krithika Selvi, a nine year old daughter of a rickshaw driver, to attend for at least the next four years. Krithka wishes to become a teacher.
Usha Raman has invited Emanuel School to participate in the well established partnership link between Sri Jayendra and Mill Hill School. Ten Emanuel pupils and four members of the Common Room will travel to Sankarnagar in July 2011 to teach English conversation and to participate in the life of the School. The group will be led by the Chaplain who taught there in 2009. Emanuel is currently looking to develop Community Service and this project enhances this, providing an opportunity for service overseas. It is, however, very much a relationship between partners and both Emanuel pupils and staff will leave having received as much, if not more, than they have given.
IR spectrometer for the chemistry department
An IR spectrometer is the standard chemistry technique to identify groups of atoms and molecules. Until recently a very specialist piece of equipment only available in the realms of university research, this technology now forms part of both the GCSE and A level syllabus such is the pace of both the technological development and educational expectation in chemistry . There are many applications that the IR spectrometer can be used for, from explaining global warming to the breathalyser so it will be available for a wide variety of scientific study within school.
Rowing: coxless Pair/Double Scull Convertible for Girls' use.
Boys' rowing has always been a strength at Emanuel, but in recent years as the number of girls on the school roll has grown, girls' rowing has been going from strength to strength. Two years ago for the first time, the senior girls' squad qualified for Henley and reached the semi finals in a coxed V111. This was a great achievement. This year the girls won at Hammersmith and Chiswick regattas; in all rowing is going well. However, in order to compete at a high level the girls need specialist boats. Female boats are smaller in hull shape and have other design features that make them more suited to girls' rowing.. We would like a pair/double scull convertible that can be used by our girls rather than using one of the bigger and heavier boys' boats. If we are to dream of faster girls' crews, then speed training in small boats is essential and having the right sort of boat is a must as they can concentrate on boat moving skills rather than having to move a big heavy boat along with little finesse.
Modern Foreign Languages department video cameras
The MFL department would like three video cameras to record pupils' role plays, one each for French, Spanish and German. Using video in role play encourages excellence in language development of the individual.
Archives
Six 6 years ago a large selection of over 100+ very old volumes dating from the 1870s-1940s were found in one of the storage cupboards. They were in a terrible condition, and were rotting with red rust. This type of decay is irreversible, and the only way to save the books was to invest in rebinding. Some of the books we found were incredible. They included the original register of the first pupils to attend Emanuel at Wandsworth, after the move from Westminster. This one volume alone, as an archive and family history tool, has been astonishing useful as it allows us to answer all those family history enquiries that in previous years would just have drawn a blank. Other documents include all the pre-War Headmaster reports, school pupil reports, registration and school fees. Over the last 4 years we have been slowly restoring the volumes in the worst of condition, and am now nearing the end of the project. Old Boys have already helped in the restoration of the volumes, and we hope that with further help these precious documents can be saved for future Emanuel generations.
Theatrical equipment
Our drama productions are always of a high standard, and the request for additional theatrical equipment and costumes to enhance the productions is always on the lips of the Director of Drama and his technical support.
Musical instruments
The music department is always in need of new instruments in order to offer the widest musical experience for our pupils.
